So we’re a few months into ANAD Marvel and, as random opinionated stranger, I thought I’d give you my two cents. I’ll get the negative out of the way. Nova feels a bit bland. I liked Sam’s first series but this one doesn’t seem to have taken off. I’ll keep buying because I get the feeling it’s building up to something and some of the writer’s ideas for future issues sound interesting. I’m also a bit worried at this point that the series is going to go back to Sam searching for his dad. We’ve been there, done that, bought the complete 31 issue run. I really hope this series takes Sam in new and interesting directions.

Now that’s over onto, the positive. ANAD Avengers is great. It’s top of my pull list every month. The writing is spot on and art is fantastic. I love the way Nova and Ms. Marvel bounce off each other. In fact I don’t think Sam has ever been written this well before. And the thing between Cap and Thor is sweet. Captain Marvel may only be two issues in but I love the more sci fi direction it’s taking. Guardians of Infinity is awesome and displays perfectly why Dan Abnett should always have a cosmic title.

So yeah, generally I very excited about Marvel at the moment. The only way it could be better is if you brought Rich back (sorry. I had to get that in there somewhere). Thanks for making wednesdays awesome.

a short selection of concepts and phrases that used to be commonplace in fandom and we’d really benefit from making that a thing again:

NOTP: the opposite of an OTP (One True Pairing). It is a ship a fan strongly dislikes. The word is a portmanteau of ‘no’ and ‘OTP’ and thus is not a contraction of any particular phrase.

Squick: anything that is a deep-seated, visceral turn-off. Squicks may be shared by many fans or be specific to one; one person’s kink may be another person’s squick.

YKINMKATO, or kink-tomato: Your Kink Is Not My Kink, And That’s Okay: used to indicate support for fannish diversity and to distinguish between disapproval or kink shaming and simply having different taste.

DLDR: Don’t Like, Don’t Read: a phrase used to warn against complaints about an aspect of fic or meta. A “live and let live” philosophy of fandom, which places the responsability for avoiding content one doesn’t want to see on the side of the fanwork consumer, rather that on the creator’s.

SALS: Ship And Let Ship: similar to the above specifically about shipping tastes.

YMMV: Your Mileage May Vary: a phrase used to acknowledge that any given individual’s personal opinion on the topic at hand may differ due to their own tastes, standards, values, experiences, etc.

As the OP points out, all of these crucially imply no moral judgment of what they’re designing.

i think dldr isn’t gone, it’s just more or less entirely morphed into Dead Dove: Do Not Eat.

but we can always do with the reminder that if you open a dead dove fic, you can’t complain about the bird corpse you found inside.

DL,DR and Dead Dove: Do Not Eat are slightly different concepts. DL,DR means don’t hate read something you know you won’t like or realize you don’t like after starting to read it. Dead Dove: Do Not Eat means read the fucking tags, it is warning for exactly the things you might not like.

The first is “get off my lawn, you already know you don’t like flamingos” and the second is “this contains gluten and if you’re allergic maybe don’t imbibe.”

But I agree that they are kind of getting conflated, the difference is super subtle and Dead Dove does a pretty good job either way

Whether you us DL,DR or DD:DNE, tag your story. Tag it accurately and completely. If you don’t bother to tag and instead just slap DL,DR or DD:DNE over everything, don’t be surprised when people complain that you didn’t tag for (whatever thing it was that set them off). Because you didn’t tag. DL,DR/DD:DNE aren’t tags in themselves, they’re an amplification of the other tags. These things I tagged are not only in the story, they’re a major part of the story. If you don’t like these tagged subjects you will not like this story.

I’m saying this because I’ve seen too many fics where the writer either tagged poorly (What the hell does ‘teen relationships’ mean?) or didn’t tag at all, and slapped one or the other of DL,DR or DD:DNE on the story as though that was enough. “Hey, there might be something that some people could find upsetting maybe” is not a warning.

Tag your fics.

And if the writer has tagged their fic, don’t complain that this thing you were warned was in the story turned out to be in the story. Put the dove back in the fridge and walk away.
